ACTH is a hormone that stimulates the production of cortisol from the adrenal gland. Cortisol is a steroid hormone which regulates glucose, protein, and fat metabolism, and modulates immune response and blood pressure. This test measures the amount of ACTH in blood. It is ordered when there are signs and symptoms associated with excess or deficient cortisol production, or to help diagnose adrenal and pituitary diseases.
The test is performed on a blood sample typically collected early in the morning. Overnight fasting may be required.
