ALT is a liver enzyme that increases in the blood as a result of liver injury or inflammation. It is usually ordered along with AST or as part of a complete liver profile to screen for and help diagnose liver problems. It is also used to monitor treatment of persons who have liver disease.
The test is performed on a blood sample. An injection or strenuous exercise may increase ALT levels, and so do some drugs and natural or herbal products. Inform your doctor if you are taking any of these.
