Apo A1 is a protein that has a role in fat or lipid metabolism and is the main protein component of HDL cholesterol. Low levels of Apo A1 are associated with increased risk of early cardiovascular (heart) disease, and may be seen more often in patients with a high fat diet, sedentary lifestyle, and high waist circumference.
Test is performed on a blood sample. A twelve hour fast is required. No food or drink, water is OK. Ideally should wait for at least two months after a heart attack, surgery, infection or pregnancy before checking the levels of this protein.
