Apo B is a protein that is involved in the metabolism of fats or lipids. It is the main protein component of VLDL and LDL cholesterol. Concentrations of Apo B tend to mirror those of LDL cholesterol. Your doctor may order Apo A1 and this test to determine an ApoB/Apo A1 ratio. Elevated levels of Apo B are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
Test is performed on a blood sample. A twelve hour fast is required. No food or drink, water is OK. Ideally should wait for at least two months after a heart attack, surgery, infection or pregnancy before checking the levels of this protein.
