AST is a liver enzyme that gets elevated in blood as a result of liver injury or inflammation. ALT is more specific to liver than AST, however the ratio of AST/ALT helps distinguish between different causes of liver damage and to differentiate liver injury from damage to heart or muscle.
It is performed on a blood sample. Pregnancy, an injection, exercise, burn injury, any surgery, or seizures may increase AST levels. So do some medicines and herbal supplements.
