Pancreas produces a hormone called insulin to bring down the glucose (sugar) levels in blood. C-peptide is a byproduct created when insulin is produced. Generally the level of C-peptide in blood indicates the level of insulin. The test is done to determine the cause of hypoglycemia and sometimes to distinguish between type I and type II diabetes.
Test is performed on a blood sample. You should not eat or drink anything other than water for 12 hours before the test
