D-dimer is a protein fragment of the clotting process in blood. The test is done if a blood clot is suspected. This is called thrombosis. Depending on the part of the body where the clot happens, it could lead to conditions like DVT(deep venous thrombosis), pulmonary embolism, or stroke. It is generally used as a test to rule out a clot as the pathology. It may also be used to monitor treatment of a conditions called DIC (disseminated intravascular coagulation)
