Bilirubin is a pigment that is excreted through the liver and gives the stool its colour. It is measured to assess liver function. It can be measured as a total level and as conjugated or unconjugated levels. Direct bilirubin is an estimate of the amount of conjugated bilirubin. By subtracting direct from total bilirubin, Indirect or unconjugated bilirubin is estimated. These help in differentiating the underlying cause of jaundice (Hyperbilirubinaemia)
