Homocysteine is an amino acid that body normally makes. High levels can damage lining of arteries and encourage blood clots. Hence the test may be ordered as part of a screening for high risk of heart attacks or strokes. Since it is elevated in persons with vitamin B12 and folic acid deficiency, the test may be done to verify these conditions. It may be done as part of newborn screening to check for homocystinuria, an inherited condition.
Test is performed on a blood sample. No preparation is needed. Recent B vitamin ingestion may affect the test results.
