PSA is a protein made by the cells of the prostate gland in men. Higher than normal levels may indicate prostate cancer, benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), inflammation or infection of the prostate. Total PSA and rectal exam may be used to screen for prostate cancer. If the exam is normal, but total PSA is slightly elevated, a free PSA may be ordered to at the free to total PSA ratio, to distinguish between prostate cancer and other causes of elevated PSA.
