Aldosterone is a hormone made by the adrenal glands. It regulates sodium, potassium and water levels in the body. It also helps regulate the blood pressure. This test along with a plasma renin test is often used to diagnose fluid and electrolyte disorders, heart problems, kidney failure, or adrenal disease. It is also used for diagnosing certain causes of high blood pressure (Hypertension)
The test is usually performed in the morning. Avoid changing the amount of salt in your diet and strenuous exercise prior to testing. Licorice can mimic aldosterone, so avoid it prior to testing.
