This test is performed in pregnant women usually during the second trimester as a screening test for any birth defects. It is often ordered as part of a triple screen or a quad screen along with HCG, Estriol and Inhibin A. The test is especially important for women who are at a high risk for having children with birth defects (35 yrs or older, history of diabetes, family history of birth defects etc.). If you are not pregnant, AFP test may be requested to help diagnose and monitor certain liver conditions like cancer, cirrhosis or hepatitis. It can also be used to help detect and diagnose cancers of the liver, testes, and ovaries.
