Ammonia test is performed in infants when they show signs of irritability, lethargy, and seizures following a viral illness to rule out a condition called Reye's syndrome or hepatic encephalopathy. In adults it is ordered to evaluate the cause for altered consciousness or confusion especially in a person known to be suffering from a liver condition. It may also be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for hepatic encephalopathy.
This test is performed on a blood sample. Do not smoke prior to sample collection
