Cortisol is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal gland. It is released in response to ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone), which is produced by the pituitary gland. Cortisol is the main hormone involved in stress and the fight or flight response. This test is done to check if the cortisol production levels are too high or too low.
Cortisol levels vary throughout the day. This test is performed on a blood sample usually in the morning. Sometimes an evening cortisol may be requested to check for certain conditions. Avoid strenuous activity before the test
