Sample Type: SERUM
Serum Iron measures the amount of iron in the blood. Iron is an important mineral for the synthesis of haemoglobin, a protein found in the red blood cells (RBCs) which carries oxygen to all parts of the body. Lack of adequate haemoglobin in the blood is called anemia, and anemia due to inadequate iron is called iron deficiency anemia.
Test is performed on a blood sample. Fasting overnight may be required. Iron levels are generally closest to normal in morning and get lower as the day goes on. Certain medications may affect the results like alcohol, antibiotics, oral contraceptives
