Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is a hormone that is produced during pregnancy by the placenta. A quantitative HCG test may be performed to confirm pregnancy, to determine the age of foetus, to diagnose an ectopic pregnancy, a potential miscarriage, or as part of a screening for down syndrome in the baby. A free beta HCG as opposed to a Total or Intact beta HCG is considered a more reliable marker for Down syndrome in the first trimester.
Test is performed on a blood sample. No preparation is needed. Inform your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins, nutritional supplements, herbal or ayurvedic preparations, and homeopathic medicines you are taking
