TIBC tests how much iron is available in the blood. Iron in the blood is carried by a protein made in the liver called transferrin. TIBC test is based on the measurement of certain proteins including transferrin. The test is generally performed along with serum iron and transferrin levels to help differentiate between different causes of anemia and to measure the severity of iron deficiency anemia.
Test is performed on a blood sample. Fasting after midnight from the night before the test is recommended
