Creatinine is a byproduct of muscle action. The body produces creatinine at a constant rate, and healthy kidneys excrete almost all of it. By comparing your blood creatinine level to urine creatinine level, one can assess the kidney function. Since the excretion of creatinine is fairly constant, urinary creatinine is also used as a reference point to compare the levels of other substances like protein, calcium etc to determine if their levels in urine are high or low.
This test requires a 24 hour collection. Empty your bladder completely first thing in the morning and collect urine everytime you go to the toilet for the next 24 hours, including the first time the next morning. Factors that could interfere with the
